Course Update

Finally a great day for everyone to enjoy.  This week we have been quite busy even with the bad weather.  The golf course is actually in fine shape we are finally starting to get into a routine of mowing all the maintained turf.  The cool/wet weather really has not been all that bad the turf is not growing too vigorously but the roots have been growing nicely.  In this picture you can see a lot of roots, but what is very cool is that in the channels made by the aeration holes the roots have pretty much filled each channel.  These channels are a great supply of oxygen and not overall saturated which in turn allows the roots to grow.

This week we have completed the back nine and all but 6 and 7 on the front nine using the herbicide that will control the undesirable grasses in the fescue.  Today we also sprayed a new herbicide to control weeds on 4,5,6.  This is the first time that we have sprayed basically all the fescue on the golf course.  In mid-may we will finish the application of the weeds herbicide on the rest of the course.  I am sure that you have noticed the new fescue overwintered great and looks good.  We have enlarged some of the cart areas that enter and exit the course and will be reseeding these areas over the next few weeks. I feel this year the fescue should look really good and believe we are finally getting very close to having a beautiful stand of fescue grass. We are also going to spray a growth regulator in some of the areas to hopefully reduce the density of the stand.  The test plots were encouraging last year.

Today, we also started to remove the sod from the chipping bunker.  Over the last 10 years with the high use the bunker gets there is a considerable layer of sand on the face.  I honestly did not think it was as deep as it is but the bunker looks terrible and needs to be repaired.  Last years transformation of the bunker on 15 turned out great and I am confident that the chipping bunker will be as it was originally intended when completed.

I hope that you will be able to enjoy the golf course this weekend and I hope to see you soon.
